Surgery Explainers
Columbia Irving Medical Center
Animation, Character

Going in for a procedure can be nerve-wracking, even worse if you don't fully understand the procedure and expectations. Columbia University Irving Medical Center reached out to find an animated approach to provide clearer information for their patients. We took a deep dive into dense surgical material, procedure videos, and patient stories to distill a collection of animations that Columbia could use to educate and provide a better overall experience for its patients.

A pivotal part of the series hinged on character design. Each patient was designed around their respective topic or procedure. For example, our diaphragm character was intentionally barrel-chested to draw attention to the respiratory system. By keeping this in mind and building from there, we were able to create a cohesive ecosystem of characters for both patients, family, and doctors.
